Afghanistan’s wicket-keeper batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz became the first-ever player to score a half-century in Lanka Premier League. It was during the tournament opener game between Colombo Kings and Kandy Tuskers that saw a high-scoring first innings.

Kings skipper had won the toss and chose to bowl first at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota. Colombo openers Kusal Perera and Rahmanullah Gurbaz went berzerk the moment they took the field.

The duo stitched a partnership of 75 runs for the first wicket and gave a solid start to their side. Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah also scripted a record by becoming the first player to reach 50-run mark in the Lanka Premier League.

He smashed 53 runs off 22 balls as he clobbered six boundaries and four sixes. He departed in the 6th over but that didn’t stop Kusal Perera from the punishing spree.

Perera became the leading scorer by hammering Kandy bowlers, carting them for nine boundaries and 4 sixes. He scored 87 runs off 52 balls and also powered his side to a whopping total of 219 runs with a loss of three wickets.

Kusal Mendis (30) and Gunaratne (33) also contributed significantly as Colombo raced past the 200-run mark in the league.

Put a stiff target of 220 runs, Colombo Kings require 69 runs off 29 balls with Andre Russell and Ashan Priyanjan still on the field.
