Former England cricketer Alec Stewart is believed to be the frontrunner for the role of England’s national selector. Stewart has a varied experience in cricket administration and has emerged as one of the most successful management personnel in the England Cricket Board (ECB).

Alec Stewart has been the Director of Surrey county club for the past eight years. He has been highly acknowledged for Surrey’s success in the recent past and is known to develop key strategies during his tenure. Rob Key, the current Managing Director of the England national cricket team is also believed to be in favour of Stewart.

The role of England’s national selector was discontinued in 2021. Ashley Giles, who last served at the position had resigned and handed over the selection authorities to the then head coach of the team Chris Silverwood. Ed Smith had also served as the selector before Giles.

However, England’s recent collapse in the red-ball test as well as the white-ball format has made the governing body rethink its decision to re-establish the position. Robert Key had earlier separated the red ball and white ball duties to McCullum-Stokes and Mott-Buttler respectively.

Key’s decision to split the duties between two senior members and coaches has unarguably increased the need for an independent selector who will hold the responsibilities and coordinate the selection process for each vital format of the game.

Stewart was also being considered for the post of Managing Director alongside Robert. His seniority and experience will likely make him a perfect fit for the post. Stewart will likely be supported by key assistant selectors and the frontrunners for the same are believed to be Nick Knight, Steven Finn and Steve Harminson.

The upcoming national selector will work closely with Mo Bobat and David Court who are the incumbent Performance Director and Talent Identification Leads for England Cricket Board. It will be interesting to find out the decision by England Cricket.
