Leading e-commerce vendor and logistics supplier Amazon is sighting the media rights for major ICC events that will be conducted in a time frame from 2024 to 2031. Amazon’s preparedness comes ahead of the firm’s strategy to sell long-term subscriptions to its global client base.

Amazon management has given a nod and the multinational conglomerate will likely look to go ahead with its bid. Strategists from Amazon had meetings with top ICC officials in the United Kingdom in June. Prior to that, meetings were also conducted in India and Dubai.

Amazon is open to a consortium with a television broadcaster and applying for a composite bid. The ICC is offering three packages for streaming of major events- television, digital and both. Amazon can likely tie up with Sony or Zee. However, both the streaming platforms have denied the possibility.

Amazon has expanded its sports streaming operations with a giant leap in the United Kingdom. It recently acquired the rights to stream the top-tier Champions League for the 2024-25 season. Amazon Prime will also broadcast the weekend matches of the English Premier League from the upcoming season.

In the tennis frame, Amazon has already been streaming the US Open Championship. It had also acquired the rights to broadcast the French Open and Ligue 1 in France whereas the National Football League in the United States.

Amazon had tried bidding for IPL broadcasting rights

Amazon is targeting to enter the cricket streaming platform in India. Cricket is the heart of sports in India. Amazon had shown its interest in acquiring the rights to broadcast the IPL under Package C but opted out as it consisted of broadcasting only 18-22 non-exclusive matches.

ICC will complete the formalities of broadcasting rights of its events by the end of the year. For the Indian region, we can witness massive bidding with Amazon likely to participate in the witch-hunt.

Meanwhile, the BCCI in its recently conducted Annual General Meeting in Mumbai has settled its 12-year-long dispute with Zee media.
