Andy Flower named Lucknow IPL franchise head coach

Former Zimbabwe cricketer, Andy Flower has been appointed as the head coach of the Lucknow franchise, which will be making its debut in IPL 2022. Reportedly, it’s the first appointment made by the franchise for the upcoming edition of the tournament. It is believed that BCCI has informed both the franchises to not announce the name of the three players selected for the IPL 2022. Earlier, the deadline for shortlisting the players was 25th December 2021.

The owner of the Lucknow franchise, Sanjiv Goenka has stated that Flower’s contract is longer, although he didn’t specify the duration of his stint. In a media interaction, Goenka heaped praise on Andy Flower, adding that he was selected due to his professionalism and that he had left an indelible mark on the game both as a player and as a coach.

For those of you who don’t know, Andy Flower previously served as the assistant coach of Punjab Kings in 2020 and 2021 editions of IPL. He has a great coaching success over the years. The flower was the coach of the England team which dominated Test Cricket and were the number one ranked Test side a decade ago. Also, he was at the helm when Paul Collingwood-led England team won the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup.

Andy Flower also has a successful role as a coach in franchise cricket. He was the coach of the Multan Sultans team which won the PSL title this year. He also led St Lucia Kings to two CPL finals in 2020 and 2021. Flower’s latest international assignment was as a consultant with Afghanistan at the T20 World Cup.

“When I was with England, we wanted to approach the game differently, and help us as coaches to understand the game to a different depth and breadth, and also help players challenge their understanding of the game,” Flower was quoted as saying to ESPN Cricinfo,

“In this last period, it’s an important part of it. But you can never forget that you’re dealing with human beings. One of the most important things I’ve learned in my years of coaching is that looking after the person is more important than developing the player. It’s a really important thing to learn as a coach because it drives how you interact with people, and how you care for them.”
