Former Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Matthews sustained an injury during the ongoing Lanka Premier League on Sunday. The all-rounder is now likely to be unavailable for the upcoming South Africa series due to his hamstring injury.

It was during the first semi-finals match between Colombo Kings and Galle Gladiators where Matthews sustained a hamstring pull and later did not bowl. The intensity of his injury hasn’t been determined yet, but the official account of the Galle Cricket broke the news.

Sri Lanka is scheduled to tour South Africa after the Lanka Premier League with the first Test match slated to begin December 26. Matthews will most likely miss both the Tests against South Africa, will hopefully recover before the home series against England.

“The physio assessed it and said it looks like I will be out of the South Africa series, but I’ll get an MRI today and to confirm,” Mathews told ESPNcricinfo.

Sri Lanka head coach Mickey Arthur congratulated the Gladiators for the win but also wished of no more injuries ahead of the South Africa series.

Matthews didn’t have a good outing in the match as a skipper Colombo Kings lost the game by 2 wickets. His absence in the squad during their bowling also cost them the match and the place in the finals.

“[The injury] had been building up,” Mathews said.

“I wanted to rest myself and wasn’t able to rest myself during the tournament. Even the previous game I felt it a little bit, and then I felt it go in the last game.” he further stated.
