Sri Lankan batter Angelo Mathews has tested positive for COVID 19. Oshada Fernando will now replace Matthews following a great form in the domestic circuit of the island nation. The match will continue as anticipated. According to the new Covid protocol, only players who will show symptoms will be tested.

The test is currently in Australia’s favour and losing an experienced campaigner won’t make things easier for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka won the ODI series and was looking to dominate the test series as well. But Australia had other plans and they came all gun blazing against Sri Lanka.

Oshada Fernando, Mathews’ replacement, struggled with the bat in the second inning. Mitchell Swepson dismissed him for 12 runs off 18 balls. As of now, it does not appear that the contest will proceed to Day 4.

The circumstance calls Mathews’ participation in the second Test, which begins on July 8, into question. Without the dependable batter, Sri Lanka’s chances in the series finale would be severely harmed.

A Sri Lanka Cricket statement confirmed the news, “He (Angelo Mathews ) was found to be positive during a Rapid Anti-Gen Test Conducted on the player. The test was done, as the player was feeling unwell. He has been isolated from the rest of the team members and is following covid-19 protocols.”

The series Warne-Muralitharan Trophy is named after the two most successful Test bowlers in history, who have a combined total of 1,508 wickets. This is the first series for the trophy since Australian star Shane Warne died of a heart attack while on holiday in Thailand in March.
