According to an announcement made on Thursday the 2022–23 domestic season will see Arjun Tendulkar play for Goa. The lanky left-arm pacer has been participating in Goa’s training sessions. And he is on track to be the state’s first season-long professional signing. The son of legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s, Arjun has played for Mumbai in a few T20 matches.

Confirming the planned switch, Tendulkar said, “Getting maximum game time on the ground is important for Arjun at this juncture of his career. We believe that the shift will improve the probability of Arjun featuring in more competitive matches. He is embarking on a new phase of his cricketing career.”

Goa Cricket Association president Suraj Lotilkar said that the state team wanted a left-arm pacer.

“We are in need of a left-arm pacer and Arjun has showed interest. We generally recruit professionals and if he suits our team’s requirements he will be picked. It is up to our selectors.”

Arjun (22) played for the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team during the league stages of the previous season but was unable to go to the elimination rounds. The youngster was never able to make it to the XI though. The reason is possibly the higher number of talented individuals in Mumbai.

Salil Ankola, the head selection for Mumbai, thought that Arjun’s career will benefit from the decision. “We picked him for the Ranji Trophy last year but he could not make the XI. He is an extremely talented boy and all he needs is some match time so that he can prove his abilities. I hope this switch will serve that purpose,” Ankola, former Indian pacer, said.

India’s domestic cricket season to kickstart on September 8

The domestic season starts on September 8 this year. The real inter-state competition which can provide an opportunity for Arjun will be in two months. It will be when the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy gets underway from October 11 to 22 (league stage). December 13 marks the start of the Ranji season. Goa placed fourth in Elite Group D of the Ranji Trophy the previous year with one tie and two losses.
