The much-awaited Ashes 2021-22 Test began today on 8th December 2021 with England taking on Australia at The Gabba in Brisbane. Despite the conditions being overcast and a green pitch laid on, Joe Root won the toss and batted first.

Usually, in Australia, teams tend to bat first after winning the toss, but the decision backfired. A collective bowling effort from Australia led to England getting bowled out for just 147 in the first innings. Mitchell Starc took the first blood on the very first ball of the innings. He bowled a peach of a delivery to send Rory Burns back to the hut on the very first ball.

Josh Hazlewood then picked two important wickets of Dawid Malan (6 off 9) and Joe Root (0 off 9) and Pat Cummins removed the dangerous Ben Stokes for 5 to leave England tottering at 29 for 4 inside 13 overs. Haseeb Hameed (25 off 75), Ollie Pope (35 off 79), and Jos Buttler (39 off 58) showed some resistance but none of the batsmen could go on to score big.

Pat Cummins didn’t take a lot of time to wipe off the tail as he went on to pick a five-wicket haul on Wednesday. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood picked two wickets each. Jos Buttler looked at the batsman on the day as he looked to counter-attack but sadly he got out after showing some promise.

Rain interrupted the day after the completion of the first innings. Heavy non-stop rain later meant it was called Stumps at Day 1. Only 50.1 overs were bowled on the day. With the conditions favouring the fast bowlers, England too would look to make early inroads tomorrow. Things could be really difficult for them if they couldn’t pick wickets early on tomorrow. It will be interesting too how Day 2 plays out.
