Asia Cup 2022 Opener: Afghanistan is off to a brilliant start in the Asia Cup as they beat Sri Lanka in their first game by 8 wickets on Sunday at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. M Nabi and Co. bowled out Sri Lanka for just 105 runs in the first innings.

The left-arm pacer, F Farooqi troubled the batters with his swinging deliveries. He got rid of Kusal Mendis (2) and Asalanka (0) on two consecutive deliveries in his very first over.  Naveen ul Haq then had Pathum Nissanka in the very next over to leave Afghanistan reeling at 5 for 3 inside the first two overs.

Gunathilaka (17) and B Rajapaksa (38) then added 44 runs for the fourth wicket to lead some recovery. However, the partnership was eventually broken by Mujeeb to help Afghanistan, once again, take control.

The likes of Hasaranga and Shanaka too couldn’t stay for too long while Rajapaksa’s wicket in the 13th over meant Sri Lanka didn’t even look like reaching 100-run mark. However, a resilient 31 off 39 from Karunaratne helped Sri Lanka reach 15 runs at the end of the first innings.

As for Afghanistan’s bowling, F Farooqi claimed 3 for 11 in 3.4 overs, while Mujeeb and Nabi picked two wickets each. In pursuit of the run-chase, Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz stitched an 83-run partnership for the opening wicket, denying Sri Lanka of having any hope of making a comeback.

Zazai played an unbeaten knock of 37 runs in 28 balls, while Gurbaz played a stellar knock of 40 runs in just 18 deliveries. Both of them got out but Afghanistan managed to chase down the score in 10.1 overs.

Asia Cup 2022 Opener Brief Scores: Afghanistan 106 for 2 (Gurbaz 40*, Zazai 37, Hasaranga 1-19) beat Sri Lanka 105 all out (Rajapaksa 38, Farooqi 3-11, Nabi 2-14) by 8 wickets
