The uncertainty over the hosts of Asia Cup 2022 remains in jeopardy as the political crisis in the island nation of Sri Lanka deepens further. Sri Lanka was scheduled to host the Asia Cup that is about to kickstart on August 26.
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is likely to take a decision to shift the tournament to the United Arab Emirates. According to the sources, discussions are already underway between the ACC and Emirates Cricket Board.
The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is trying its best to retain its host rights as it successfully managed to host Pakistan for a Test series. SLC will lose a major chunk of their revenue if the tournament shifts outside of its territory.
Earlier in the week, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapakse had fled the Maldives after the protestors stormed into his residence. With no active government in the country, security concerns will be a major challenge for SLC.
The six-nation cricket tournament is the most prestigious championship in Asia. All the other participants including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and most likely UAE are closely monitoring the situation in Sri Lanka.
The SLC Board in its statement has mentioned that there is no constraint from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to shift the venue for the upcoming prestigious Asian championship. However, the ACC will take the final decision on Sunday on whether Sri Lanka will continue to hold the hosting rights of the Asia Cup 2022.
Asia Cup 2022 to kickstart on August 26
The Asia Cup 2022 will begin on 26 August and run until 11 September. The Indian contingent is geared up to retain the trophy after a successful campaign in the previous edition. In view of the T-20 World Cup scheduled later in the year, India will put up a strong combination for the preparations.
