The 2020 Asia Cup has been continuously delayed or postponed for more than two years already, for any cause. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has urged Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to be on standby to host the Asia Cup 2022 tournament. This is due to the unfavourable circumstances in Sri Lanka. The cup is all set to begin on August 27.

Notably, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) continued to indicate its interest to host the competition. However, the nation’s recent economic and political unrest has once more cast doubt on the event in Sri Lanka. The ACC will make its final decision before the end of the third week of July.

Moving out would be a devastating blow to SLC. The SLC has so far been successful in persuading their neighbouring cricket boards, notably the BCCI, that they can successfully host the competition.

The month-long tour of Sri Lanka by the Australian men’s team has now come to an end. The Indian women’s team recently completed a tour around the nation.

ACC to reconsider tournament hosts

During the second test between Sri Lanka and Australia, protesters and general turmoil made their way to the Galle International Stadium. Due to this, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is probably going to reconsider where the competition will be held.

As Sri Lanka continues to struggle with civil turmoil, thousands of protesters stormed the Presidential Palace in Colombo last week. Protests have become the norm, due to the severe lack of necessities.

According to SLC CEO Ashley de Silva, not being able to host the Asia Cup would cost the company a loss of $5 to $6 million.

India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh all have guaranteed participation in the tournament. Qualifiers will be played between teams like the UAE, Nepal, Oman, Hong Kong, and others.

The qualifiers for the tournament will begin on August 21. And the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan will take place on August 28. It will be their first encounter since their T20 World Cup match where Pakistan beat India by 10 wickets.
