The Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) is likely to appoint a new distinct coach for its T20 International team. Currently, former Indian veteran batsman Rahul Dravid is managing the side across all three formats and Rohit Sharma is the incumbent skipper. Top sources from BCCI also indicate that BCCI is geared up to name a separate captain for the T20I side as well.
The BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai have already begun to hold talks with senior representatives. It is probable that the new coach will be appointed before January and India will likely play the T-20I series against Sri Lanka under its new T-20I coach. Also learnt is that the apex body will strip off the T-20I captaincy from Rohit Sharma and hand over the command to Hardik Pandya at the same time.
The primary reason for the change in setup is to effectively manage the workload and build a specialized T20I side. India has been struggling to conquer major international T-20I events including the recently concluded World Cup in Australia.
While Rahul Dravid will continue to focus on India’s ODI and Test Teams, Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the team in the distinguished formats. The decision to include veterans in the T20I team including Sharma, Kohli and Rahul will also be taken in the due course.
Addressing the media, a senior BCCI Spokesperson mentioned that the selection committee is not doubting anyone’s ability to manage their workload. It is just that the T-20I format is constantly evolving and developing due to which we need to have specialized skills employed to derive better results.
Earlier, former Head Coach Ravi Shastri and veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh had mentioned a distinct coaching staff and captain for India’s T-20I team. It will be interesting to find out the decision made by BCCI.
