Indian batter Shubman Gill has committed to play for Glamorgan for the remainder of the County Championship 2022 season. It is subjective on his pending visa approval. This will be his first appearance in the County Championship.
If everything goes according to plan, Gill would join as the seventh Indian player to be signed by a county team this season (Kent). The six players signed for the County Championship 2022 season are Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Washington Sundar (Lancashire), Krunal Pandya, Mohammed Siraj (both Warwickshire), Umesh Yadav (Middlesex), and Navdeep Saini. He will be the third Indian to play for Glamorgan in the County Championship after Ravi Shastri (1987-91) and Sourav Ganguly.
The top-order batsman just finished a fantastic run in the ODI series against Zimbabwe and the West Indies. He scored 205 runs at an average of 102.50 and 245 runs at an average of 122.50, respectively. Gill has played in 11 Test matches, tallying 579 runs at an average of 30.47 in those games. His most recent red-ball match was India’s defeat in the fifth Test against England in Birmingham. The match took place in July of this year, where he recorded scores of 17 and 4.
Additionally, he has played in 12 first-class matches for his home side Punjab. He played in the local red-ball competition known as the Ranji Trophy. There he has amassed 1176 runs at an average of 65.33.
Glamorgan has five victories in 10 games and is now third in Division Two. They still have four games remaining to play. The season will restart against Worcestershire on September 5 in Cardiff.
Colin Ingram will be playing in the CPL and Marnus Labuschagne and Michael Neser will be back in Australia. Hence none of the three foreign players they employed in the Championship will be available in September. Ajaz Patel will play for the team during the season’s final month, the club had already confirmed.
