English All-Rounder and captain of Durham County Club, Ben Stokes smashed a magnificent century of 64 balls on Friday at the ongoing County Championship. In his splendid innings, Stokes smashed 17 sixes and created a county record surpassing Gloucestershire’s Andrew Symonds who had smashed 16 sixes back in 1995 against Glamorgan.
Other than Symonds, Essex’s Graham Napier had smashed 16 sixes in an innings against Surrey in his county innings in 2011. Ben Stokes has been in sizzling form during the ongoing season. Stokes opted out of the Indian Premier League to focus on the national team. Stokes accomplished a memorable feat against Worcestershire in the second division of County Championship 2022 at the New Road stadium. Durham went on to command the game.
Interestingly, Ben Stokes smashed 34 runs of a Josh Baker’s over when he was at 70 runs in 59 balls. After smashing five sixes and a four of the over, Stokes ended up with 100 runs of 64 balls. This was also another record scripted by Stokes which was the most runs by any county batsman against Worcestershire.
Ben Stokes went on to score 161 runs off 88 balls which included eight fours and seventeen sixes. With the help of Stokes’ magnificent knock, Durham put up a competitive total of 580/6 and declared their innings.
Other than Stokes, Sean Dickson (104) and Keegan Petersen (50) were the other top scorers. For Worcestershire, Ben Gibbon was the pick of the bowlers who registered a figure of 2/94.
In a major breakthrough for Stokes, the English Cricket Board (ECB) appointed him as the captain of the Test team after Joe Roots stepped down.
