Cricket Australia (CA) on Wednesday announced the mechanism of the Big Bash League Draft ahead of the upcoming 12th season of the tournament. For the 2022 season, the Big Bash League will use a draught system to choose international players. Through the draught system, teams must select a minimum of two and a maximum of three players. The draught is anticipated to happen during the next two months with nominations still being accepted.

KFC BBL|12 is shaping up as the most hotly anticipated season yet, with the best of the Big Bash on display on and off the field. At the forefront of this will be the KFC BBL|12 Draft, which elevates the recruitment of overseas players to a new level.

“The Draft is designed to attract the best available players, excite fans for the upcoming season and provide new opportunities for clubs and the League. We look forward to announcing the first group of nominations soon,” Cricket Australia’s General Manager of the Big Bash League, Alistair Dobson said.

“We’d like to thank our Clubs and the Australian Cricketers’ Association for working with us on building the Draft and look forward to the event itself,”

The players will be nominated in one of four categories: Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze. With Platinum selected as the highest bracket, each category will have a different payment.

A weighted lottery will help in determining the Draft order. The first weighted lottery to determine selections one, two, and three will include the three clubs that did not advance to the KFC BBL|11 Finals.

The five winners from the previous season will then be chosen for choices four through eight.

Draught phases

There will be four rounds in the draught, with one pick for each Club. Clubs are permitted to skip some rounds, but by the end of round four, each Club must choose a minimum of two and a maximum of three participants.

Choosing Retention

One Retention Pick may be used by each team in any round of the Draft.

If a player played a game for that Club the previous season, they are eligible for retention.

Total players and substitutes

There will be 18 players on each Club’s BBL team, with two or three coming from the Draft and the rest being domestic players.

Clubs will be permitted to sign up to five replacement foreign players after the Draft. To be a qualified replacement foreign player, a player must have declared for the Draft, unless the League grants exceptions.
