Australia vs England Day 1 Highlights: Despite England starting the day with quick wickets, Australia would be happy with how things turned out for them at the end of it. Unlike the previous Tests, Australia made the worst possible start, having lost the first three wickets for just 12 runs. David Warner struggled to hit the straps, having consumed 21 deliveries without opening his account. He eventually got out on the 22nd ball.
Usman Khawaja, on the other hand, too couldn’t replicate the performances he showed in the last Test match. He got out in the 9th over after scoring 6 runs off 26 deliveries. Steve Smith followed by him in the next over, having got out on the second ball to leave Australia in all sorts of trouble at 12 for 3.
Marnus Labuschagne, too, could have gotten out on naught as he was dropped when he hadn’t even opened his account. However, he capitalized on that reprieve and stitched a valuable 71-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Labuschagne, eventually, got out after scoring 44 off 53 balls, including 9 fours.
Coming into the playing 11 after recovering from Covid-19, Travis Head played, yet another, outstanding knock of 101 runs off 113 deliveries, including 12 fours. He put on an outstanding 121-run partnership for the fifth wicket to lead Australia’s remarkable recovery. His ally, Cameron Green also played a brilliant knock of 74 runs off 109 balls, a knock which was studded with 8 fours. Australia has scored 241 runs for 6 wickets at stumps on day 1 of the fifth Test.
As for England, Stuart Broad led the way with the ball as he picked 2 wickets for 48 runs in 18 overs. Ollie Robinson too was brilliant for 2 for 24 in 8 overs. Mark Wood looked completely out of sorts as he gave as many as 79 runs in 11.3 overs with one wicket to his name.
