Ashes 2021-22, ENG vs AUS, 2nd Test: Australian Cricket Team led by Steve Smith beat England by 275 runs in the second Test to take 2-0 lead in the series on Monday. Slotted in as a replacement for Josh Hazlewood, Jhye Richardson took a five-wicket haul to bowl England out for just 192 runs in their second innings and thereby win the Test.
Jos Buttler held firm at one end and did everything he could to bat out the last day. However, he, unfortunately, got out hit-wicket after playing 207 balls for his 26. It was the ninth England wicket to fall and four overs later, Australia took the final wicket to win the game.
Earlier, Rory Burns showed some resilience on Day 4 and scored 34 off 95 balls. But Richardson ensured he didn’t get on to score a big knock. Haseeb Hameed got out in just the 2 over of the innings, while David Malan (20 off 52) too couldn’t score a big knock. Mitchell Starc took the important wicket of Joe Root (24 off 67) to make things even more difficult for England. Ben Stokes looked sublime for his 12 off 77. But he too couldn’t play for too long as Nathan Lyon trapped him leg-before. England, eventually, were bundled out for 192, thereby falling 275 runs short of the target.
Australia posted a mammoth 473-run total in the first innings after batting first in the pink-ball Test. England, in reply, managed to score 236 runs in the second innings. Australia didn’t enforce the follow-on and batted again instead. Australia batted against and scored 230 for 9 before declaring the innings. A mammoth target of 468 runs was always going to be a huge one for the visitors. Another defeat in the third Test could end England’s ambitions of winning the Test match.
ENG vs AUS, 2nd Test Brief Scores:
