BAN vs SL 2022: Shakib Al Hasan has returned to Bangladesh’s lineup for the first Test against Sri Lanka in Chattogram on May 15, after missing the Tests against South Africa in March owing to personal issues. Rejaur Rahman Raja, an uncapped fast bowler who was also chosen in the squad for the Pakistan Test last year, has been added to the 16-man roster.
Shakib last played in whites against Pakistan at home before skipping the Tests against New Zealand and South Africa.
Shakib would be very useful as the conditions would support spinners. The dry wickets would help Shakib extract turn and bounce on the wicket. Shakib as a batter would also understand the conditions very well as Shakib has a lot of experience in these conditions.
Shadman Islam and Abu Jayed were left out of the team, while Taskin Ahmed is currently recovering from a shoulder injury. After missing the Tests in South Africa owing to an ankle ailment, left-arm quick Shoriful Islam was named in the team pending health.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz both sustained injuries during their Dhaka Premier League match in Savar, raising fresh injury concerns for the club. Their injuries, however, are not significant, according to head selector Minhajul Abedin.
“[Mushfiqur and Mehidy’s injuries] aren’t serious,” Abedin said. “They’ll be in the Test side.” “The practice match will be played by Shadman (against Sri Lanka). Raja was a member of the Test team previously, and he returns due to injury concerns in the pace department.”
Sri Lanka is set to arrive in Chattogram on May 8 for a two-match Test series as part of the World Test Championship, while the hosts will arrive on the same day to prepare for the series. On May 10 and 11, the teams will conduct a two-day practice match in BKSP. The second Test will take place in Dhaka on May 23.
