India vs South Africa: South Africa speedster Anrich Nortje has been will miss the Test series against India, Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed on Tuesday. The 28-year-old has been sidelined after he failed to recover from the “persistent” injury. His exclusion from the three-match Test series against India comes as a huge blow for South Africa as the series will be a part of the ICC World Test Championship.
“Proteas bowler, Anrich Nortje, has been ruled out of the three-match, Betway Test series against India, due to a persistent injury. He has unfortunately not recovered adequately for the expected Test match bowling loads and is currently consulting with specialists to manage and advise on his recovery. No replacement will be brought in,” CSA said in a statement.
“The Proteas have commenced their final preparation ahead of the first match starting on Boxing Day. It is the Test team’s first series since their successful tour to the West Indies in July of this year, where they won the series two-nil,” the press release added.
Nortje last played Test cricket for South Africa in June this year against West Indies. He picked 8 wickets in two matches and helped his side cruise to a 2-0 win against the West Indies. As of now, CSA has not named any replacement of Nortje, implying, the likes of Duanne Olivier and Sisanda Magala could get a chance in the Test series.
The first Test of the IND vs SA will begin from Boxing Day i.e., December 26 (Sunday). The match will be played behind closed doors without spectators owing to protocols against the new variant of virus in the country.
