India vs South Africa 2022: South Africa beat India by 31 runs in the first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series on Wednesday. Till the halfway stage of the innings, India looked like cruising in the chase.
In pursuit of a 296-run total, India lost KL Rahul in the 9th over of the innings with 46 runs on the board. However, Virat Kohli then joined hands with Shikhar Dhawan and the duo stitched a 92-run stand for the second wicket. India was in complete control of the game till the duo was at the crease.
Shikhar Dhawan was the second one to depart in the 26th over after scoring 79 off 84 deliveries. Virat Kohli reached his half-century but just after reaching the milestone, he got out while sweeping a ball off Shamzi in the 29th over. South Africa take complete control of the game after that as wickets kept falling at short intervals.
The likes of Rishabh Pant (16 off 22), Shreyas Iyer (17 off 17) and Venkatesh Iyer (2 off 7) failed to make a significant contribution with the bat. Shardul Thakur remained unbeaten on 50 off 43 but India, in the end, could only manage to score 265 runs in the second innings.
Earlier, South Africa got off to a poor start in the first innings as they lost the first three wickets for just 68 runs. However, Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen led a remarkable recovery as the duo put on a 204-run stand for the 4th wicket. Bavuma got out after scoring 110 off 143 deliveries, however, Rassie van der Dussen stayed unbeaten on 129 off 96 deliveries. Thanks to those valuable contributions, South Africa managed to score 296 runs in the first innings.
The second ODI is slated to be played on 20th January 2022.
