Pakistan skipper and star batsman Babar Azam has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand on Sunday. The 26-year-old sustained a fractured on his right thumb during a practice session at Queenstown.

He was rushed to the nearby hospital the moment he hurt his thumb during the throw-down session of the Pakistan team.

The number 2 batsman in the ICC T20I batting rankings was also made the skipper of the side last month, replaced Azhar Ali. It was going to be his first-ever international assignment after being appointed the skipper of Pakistan across all the formats.

The medical team revealed the report of his injury stating he will need at least two weeks to recover from the fracture.

His deputy Shadab Khan will lead the team in his absence during the series. Shadab is himself recovering from a groin niggle, will also be assessed before the first T20I match in Auckland.

“Injuries are part and parcel of professional sport and while it is hugely disappointing to lose a player of Babar Azam’s calibre for the T20Is, this opens up opportunities for the other highly talented and exciting players to step-up, understand their responsibilities and try to prove that the Pakistan side is a complete package,” head coach Misbah Ul Haq said.
