PAK vs SL: The ODI portion of Pakistan’s tour to Sri Lanka in 2022 has been cancelled, leaving only the two Tests scheduled for July. The specific dates are still being worked out.
The sides were supposed to play a three-match ODI series as part of the Future Tours Programme (FTP), but SLC said it would only hold the Tests because the ODIs would not count towards Super League points.
“We opted not to play the ODIs since they were not part of the World Super League,” SLC CEO Ashley de Silva said.
With Pakistan’s visit sandwiched between Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka in June and the Lanka Premier League slated for August, as well as the Asia Cup soon after in September, there were also concerns about player burnout ahead of the T20 World Cup later in the year. Management would try to give appropriate rest to each players and would also try to keep them fit for T20 World cup which will played in October in Australia.
Sri Lanka last played Pakistan in a Test match in 2019. That series was the first Tests in Pakistan since the Lahore bombings in 2009. The score was 1-0 in favour of the hosts.
Sri Lanka is in Bangladesh for a two-match Test series that begins on May 15. Sri Lanka have lots of matches and series in line now and will also look to win some series and move up the rankings in ICC rankings. They would also look to manage workloads of the players as they have lot on their plate.
After the Bangladesh series Sri Lanka will host the Australian for a long tour which will comprise of three T20Is, Five ODIs and two test matches which will end on 12th July. After this series Sri Lanka and Pakistan will face each other for test series.
