The Indian team selection for the South African and Ireland series is round the corner. According to Inside Sports, a selector confirmed that Virat Kohli will be rested and seen in the Indian jersey on the England tour. This comes amidst the poor form of the former Indian skippers at the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The selectors will likely rest Kohli who has scored only 138 runs in the last 10 matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Speaking to a sports media journalist, a member of the selection committee said that it is totally natural that a player goes through a rough patch and as it is, the selectors were aiming to give the opportunity to a bunch of young players.
However, the selector reaffirmed that the decision will be made after consulting with Kohli. If he wants to play, we will have a thorough discussion and speak to him before the selection meeting. Kohli is truly an exceptional talent and his contribution to Indian cricket is valuable. However, the whole cricketing fraternity believes that he is overcooked and needs rest.
Earlier in the week, former Indian cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri too advised Kohli to pull out of the IPL and take a rest. But Kohli is yet to confirm his availability to the selection committee. Apart from Kohli, the senior selection committee is also considering resting senior players including captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah.
Virat Kohli has failed to score a century since 2019. Though he has been consistent in scoring the crucial fifties. It is important for the national team to avail of the benefits of services from Virat Kohli as his contribution has helped India win many important series. The time will definitely tell the future of the Indian run machine.
