Faf du Plessis will serve as the captain of the Johannesburg Super Kings in the CSA T20 competition from next year. The team selected Du Plessis as one of its five direct signings, paying US$370,000. Moeen Ali’s services were hired by the franchise for $400,000 which is controlled by Chennai Super Kings Sports Limited.
Du Plessis served as a player with Chennai Super Kings for two stints. One from 2011 to 2015 and subsequently from 2018 to 2021, totalling 100 games. Moeen also joined the Chennai Super Kings as a player in 2021.
Maheesh Theekshana ($200,000), a Sri Lankan off-spinner, has been signed by the Johannesburg team. He is signed as another member of Chennai’s 2022 squad. The squad has also brought in West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd ($175,000). South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee ($50,000) a development player is also part of the squad.
A few members of the coaching staff are also former members of the Chennai Super Kings. Additionally, Stephen Fleming will serve as the head coach in Johannesburg, working alongside Eric Simons. The team is also close to hiring former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel to join the coaching staff. Morkel played with Chennai Super Kings from 2008 to 2013, participating in their 2010 and 2011 back-to-back IPL championships.
The six organisations are permitted to sign big players directly from a pool of 30 names that CSA recently finalised.
The maximum squad size for the six franchises is 17. Franchises have begun publicly announcing their direct signings. But the remaining 12 players will be chosen at an auction on September 20 this year.
The maximum wage that can be withheld in accordance with the laws is $250,000, but they have been offered an auction purse of $2 million.
