Indian women’s cricket team have sealed their spot for the semi-final at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 as they beat Barbados by 100 runs on Wednesday. India batted exceedingly well to post 160 runs on the board in the first innings, thanks to stellar knocks from Shafali Varma and Jemimah Rodrigues.
Despite Madhana getting out early, Varma gave the team a quick-fire start. She added 71 runs for the second wicket with Rodrigues and steadied the ship. Varma was the aggressor of the two as she scored 43 runs in 26 balls, including 7 fours and 1 six. Unfortunately, she got run-out in the 9th over and Harmanpreet Kaur got out on the very first ball of her innings.
India was under pressure at 77 for 3 at halfway stage of the innings. However, Rodrigues kept scoring boundaries and stayed at the crease right till the end. She scored 56 runs in 46 balls, including 6 fours and 1 four. She found valuable support from Deepti Sharma, who scored 34 runs in 28 balls, a knock which was studded with 2 fours and 1 six.
For Barbados, the likes of Bruce, Mathews, and Selman picked one wicket but none of them could pick wickets in a cluster. In pursuit of the score, West Indies put in a horrendous display of the batting. All they could manage to score was 62 runs in the second innings. Dotting got out on a duck, while the likes of Mathews and Knight got out on 9 and 3 respectively.
Once again, Renuka Singh ran through the opposition’s batting unit as Barbados lost half of their side for just 32 runs on the board and, in the end, fell short of 100 runs. Renuka Singh was the star with the ball as she picked 4 for 10 runs in 4 overs.
CWG 2022: India Women 162 for 4 (Rodrigues 56*, Shafali 43, Deepti 34*) beat Barbados Women 62 for 8 (Kyshona 16, Renuka 4-10) by 100 runs
