Former Australian batsman and cricket coach Dav Whatmore has been appointed as the head coach of Nepal cricket team. The 66-year-old has a plentiful experience in coaching especially when he guided Sri Lanka to its maiden World Cup title in 1996.

He has also coached Pakistan cricket team and didn’t extend his contract with the board ahead of the Asia Cup in late February 2014.

Whatmore’s appointment comes just in the emergence of the qualification to the 2022 T20 World Cup at Australia. Cricket Association of Nepal is taking steps for the improvement of the side’s performance after it failed to get selected for the 2021 T20 World Cup in India.

“Dav Whatmore of Australia has been appointed as Head coach of Nepal National Cricket Team,” the board said in a statement.

“Dave [sic] is extremely keen to take on this new challenge, as he strongly believes Nepal has great talent and a very bright future in international cricket. Nepal is a beautiful country and Dave is looking forward to this new challenge with young talent in Nepal.” the statement further stated.

Whatmore also boasts guiding Bangladesh win in the Super Eights of the 2007 50-over World Cup where they even defeated India.

Besides, he has also coached Kolkata Knight Riders in two IPL campaigns and led Kerala team to the semi-finals in 2018-19 season.
