Dinesh Karthik has announced that he will step down as the captain of the IPL franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He informed the KKR management that the reason for his sudden mid-season decision is that the player wishes to invest more of his time in improving his batting form to contribute to the team more efficiently during matches.
DK is handing over the responsibility to Eoin Morgan considering his prowess as a captain.
Respecting his call, KKR franchise CEO Venky Mysore said, “We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to make a decision such as this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes”.
“We are also fortunate that Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who has been the vice-captain, is willing to lead the side going forward. DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner,” Mysore augmented.
Karthik, whom KKR bought for INR 7.4 crores, had assumed the role of the skipper of the team following the 2017 season of the IPL. Up till now, he has scored a total of 108 runs at an average of 15.42 in 7 matches this season, out of which, his team has won 4. While Morgan has been the second-highest scorer for the team with 175 runs at an average of 35.00 in 7 matches.
