ECB announces squad for South Africa Series, rests Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday announced the squads for the white-ball series against South Africa. The series is slated to begin from November 27, comprising of the T20I series, followed by the ODI series. between November 27-December 6.

This will be the first time England will travel to a Test playing nation post coronavirus pandemic globally. The series will also mark the return of international cricket in South Africa.

Eoin Morgan will be leading both T20I and ODI squad while Jos Buttler will be his deputy during the series. test skipper Joe Root has made a cut into the ODI squad but not included in the T20I squad despite a good show in the recently concluded Vitality Blast.

Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer have been rested for the tour due to their hectic schedule during the home season. National selector Ed Smith later clarified that the players have been rested in order to give them ample time to prepare for major global tournaments.

“The ECB’s position, for a number of years now, has been to permit players to play in the IPL, and that has coincided with England’s very good form in white-ball cricket, their World Cup success and also now their very strong T20 side,” Smith said.

ECB has named Tom Banton, Jake Ball and Tom Helm as the reserves for both formats during the tour. Tom Banton will also play in the BBL after the conclusion of the series.

T20I squad: Eoin Morgan (c), Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Jos Buttler (wk), Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Sam Billings, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan, Reece Topley, Mark Wood, Adil Rashid.

ODI squad: Eoin Morgan (c), Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Liam Livingstone, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler (wk), Moeen Ali, Lewis Gregory, Tom Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley, Olly Stone, Mark Wood.
