ENG vs NZ: After winning the toss and opting to field first, England wouldn’t be too happy with how the Day 1 of the second Test match ended. Tom Latham and Will Young didn’t let England pick wickets early in the first session. The duo added 84 runs for the first wicket before Ben Stokes finally provided England with the first breakthrough in the form of Will Young.

Young played a handy knock of 47 runs in 70 balls but would be disappointed to not have converted the start into a big score. Just at the end of the first session, James Anderson also sent skipper Tom Latham back to the hut as the latter pulled one straight into the hands of Matty Potts. The New Zealand skipper was fuming after getting out for 26 runs in 60 balls.

Post Lunch, Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls stitched a brilliant 77-run partnership for the third wicket. Stokes, once again, broke the partnership, getting the wicket of Nicholls (30 off 52) in the 39th over. 2 overs later, James Anderson accounted for the wicket of Devon Conway as the latter got out after scoring 46 runs in 62 balls.

England, at that stage, was looking to run through the opposition’s batting unit. However, once again, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell put on a brilliant partnership and denied England of getting an upper hand in the game. The duo stayed unbeaten right till the close of play on Day 1, putting on an unbeaten 149-run partnership for the 5th wicket.

England tried everything but couldn’t break the partnership. At the end of Day 1 of the 2nd Test, New Zealand is 318 for 4 in 87 overs. Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell are currently unbeaten at the crease for 81 (147) and 67 (136) respectively.
