ENG vs PAK: At the end of three days of the first Test between England and Pakistan, everyone would have expected the game to result in a draw. England wrote their name in the history books as they notched 500-plus runs on the first day of a Test match. They ended up notching a massive score of 657 runs in the first innings.

Pakistan also batted extremely well on a good batting surface as they posted 579 runs in the second innings. Leading up to the start of the first Test, Brendon McCullum had asserted that his team will play for a result and won’t accept a draw.

England’s batting display in their second innings on Day 4 vindicated that statement. The likes of Root, Brooks and Crawley scored a respective half-century as England notched 264 runs in just 35.5 overs.

With 3 wickets still in hand, Ben Stokes and Co. declared the innings and left everyone in shock. Pakistan was given a target of 343 runs to win the Test match with four sessions left to be played.

Anderson’s exploits stun Pakistan

Anderson and Robinson produced stellar spells in the first 14 overs, not giving any easy runs whatsoever. England got the first two wickets for just 25 runs on the board. Imam Ul Haq (48 off 77) couldn’t convert his start into a big score.

M Rizwan (46 off 92) and Saud Shakeel (76) kept Pakistan’s hopes alive with an 87-run partnership for the fourth wicket. At one stage, 174 runs were needed with 7 wickets in hand and Pakistan had the upper hand.

But James Anderson then sent Rizwan back to the hut and Robinson accounted for Shakeel’s wicket to bring England back into the game.

Azhar Ali (40) and Salman (30) tried hard with the bat but couldn’t stay for too long. In the end, they were bowled out for 268 runs, thereby losing the Test match by 74 runs.

For England, both Anderson and Robinson picked four wickets each.

ENG vs PAK Brief Scores: England 657 (Brook 153, Crawley 122, Pope 108, Duckett 107) and 264 for 7 dec (Brook 87, Root 73, Crawley 50) beat Pakistan 579 (Babar 136, Imam 121, Shafique 114, Jacks 6-161) and 268 (Shakeel 76, Anderson 4-36, Robinson 4-50) by 74 runs
