Former Australian cricketer Lisa Sthalekar has been elected as the sport’s first female president of FICA, the international players’ association. Her appointment was made at the organization’s executive committee meeting in Switzerland, the first in-person meeting since the Covid epidemic began.

Sthalekar joins a short list of former cricketers who have served as FICA president, including Barry Richards, Jimmy Adams, and Vikram Solanki.

“I am tremendously honoured and pleased to be the new president of FICA,” she stated.

“We are entering a new chapter of the game in which our male and female players will play more cricket than ever before,” she added. More countries are participating in the game, demonstrating that cricket is quickly becoming a global sport.

“I look forward to working on behalf of our member players’ associations and players, particularly with the ICC, to ensure that all players’ rights are safeguarded and that we can work together with administrators to improve our game,” Lisa added.

Between 2001 and 2013, Sthalekar played 8 Tests, 125 ODIs, and 54 T20Is for Australia, culminating in a World Cup victory. She was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame last year and has been a frequent part of the global broadcasting media. She has also worked with the Australian Cricketers’ Association and is knowledgeable about player welfare.

FICA’s executive chairman Heath Mills commented on the selection, saying, “Lisa was clearly the best candidate, and her credentials as both a former player and broadcaster are unrivalled.”

“Her prior responsibilities as an independent director of FICA and on the board of the Australian Cricketers’ Association indicate her longstanding dedication to the players’ association movement and furthering player rights,” says the statement.
