On Monday, former Indian batter Hrishikesh Kanitkar was named the senior Indian women’s cricket team’s batting coach by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Starting on December 9th in Mumbai, Kanitkar will join the team for a five-game Twenty20 International series against Australia.

As part of the BCCI’s reorganisation plan, former women’s team head coach Ramesh Powar will transition to coaching men’s cricket alongside VVS Laxman at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

“It is an honour to be appointed as the new batting coach of the senior women’s team,” Kanitkar stated upon receiving the position.

“This group has a lot of potential, and there is a nice balance between inexperienced players and veterans among them. I think they’re all set to take on anything that comes their way. This is an exciting time for the squad and me as batting coach, as we have several upcoming major competitions.”

Ramesh Power to join NCA

Ramesh Powar, the former head coach, is excited to work with Laxman at the NCA. Being the senior women’s team’s head coach has been a rewarding experience for me.

“I’ve had the privilege of working side-by-side with both established veterans and promising young players from across the country. My goal in this new position at the NCA is to use the knowledge I’ve gained over the years to aid in the development of future talent. I’m excited to collaborate with Laxman on improving the game and the team’s depth”, said Powar.

Laxman stated that having Powar on board will strengthen the NCA infrastructure as he welcomed the former India spinner.

“We are certain that Powar will bring his knowledge and experience to his new role as a spin bowling coach at the National Cricket Academy. I have no doubt that thanks to his experience with cricket at all levels (local, youth, and professional), he will contribute to the sport’s development.” Laxman expressed excitement about working with the incoming NCA director.
