ITC T20 WC Squad: Virat Kohli, who took a month-long break from playing cricket, could have started playing again sooner than expected. The selectors want the struggling India batter to return to cricket earlier than anticipated, despite his absence from the IND vs WI series.
The selectors want Kolhi to play the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe. This is so that he may “regain form” before the Asia Cup 2022. Also much more crucially, the T20 World Cup 2022. However, a choice won’t be made until towards the start of the series.
“Hopefully, the break allows him to rejuvenate mentally and get his form back. But without any competitive cricket, it will be difficult and that is why we want him to play against Zimbabwe. It’s his preferred format and will help him regain his form before the Asia Cup. We will take a final decision close to the selection,” a member of the selection committee told.
Asia Cup 2022 to likely take place in the UAE
All senior players will reportedly take a rest as the BCCI travels to Zimbabwe with a backup ODI team. Shikhar Dhawan is most likely to captain the team for the Zimbabwe tour. The problem, though, is that the Asia Cup 2022, which will immediately follow the three-match series. UAE will now most likely host the jinxed Asia Cup 2022. The Zimbabwe ODI series will be declared open from August 18.
Virat Kohli’s Test average has dropped to 50.12 from 49.53. He is currently just one bad shot away from falling below 50. However, Kohli still has a strong ODI average of 57.68. Despite Babar Azam’s comeback, Virat Kohli is the real King of ODI cricket. He has a record of 12,344 runs and 43 centuries in 260 games.
Kohli has struggled in both games against England. Yet his style fits the format the best and he has a chance to find his form again. Playing in Zimbabwe will enrich and help him regain his form. The knock Kohli is looking for might be around the corner, as Zimbabwe’s bowling attack isn’t particularly strong.
