With the world going through a deadly pandemic, social media is the only way that helps players connect with their fans. Now, these platforms seem to have a ‘darker side’, as per anti-corruption unit of ICC.

In a letter to the national boards, ICC has issued a warning raising concerns about players being approached by hackers or corruptors through social media platforms amidst the Covid-19 lockdown.

The letter states, “With most of the world experiencing lockdowns and restrictions, it has left many with time on their hands, some of which can be filled on social media. The creativity some have shown has been remarkable but there is a darker side,” the ICC letter stated before mentioning the approaches made during the lockdown. “We have seen evidence that corruptors are using their time to contact players through social media, particularly Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.”

Mad Over Cricket understands that two of the players who were approached on social media during the lockdown belonged to the USA’s men’s team. One of the players was approached offering kit sponsorship by a hacker that has been under ICC’s radar for a while now. Whereas, the second approach are still unknown.

This isn’t the first time that the USA’s players have been approached with a nasty intent. Two of USA’s national team players were approached right before the Global T20 Canada league draft last year.

The phone calls were from individuals disguised as team representatives asking to comply with their ‘demands’ if they wanted to get chosen for the franchise tournament. One of those players was eventually picked in the draft but withdrew from the tournament after failing to get the No Objection Certificate from USA.

We are yet to see what exact actions will be taken by ICC on preventing players being malicious approached. What are your thoughts on such bizarre actions taken by corruptors? Let us know your views in the comment section below.
