Ahead of the summit clash of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, Former India Test opener Aakash Chopra draws a comparison between the skippers of the two finalists. The former Indian player stated that according to him, tactfully Kane Williamson is a better captain than Indian skipper Virat Kohli.
“Tactically, Kane Williamson is the better captain, but as batsman and total package, Kohli brings in more,” Aakash Chopra said during a YouTube conversation with Pakistan cricketer Kamran Akmal.
He went on to opine about the strength areas of both the players and said how both of them are on par with each other in their own ways of handling the game.
“Both have a lot of experience and good teams. A captain is only as good as his team and they have contrasting styles. New Zealand’s Kane Williamson likes to control the game. He is very happy for the game to move at a steady pace. India’s Virat Kohli is always looking for wickets and is more expressive. Both are good in their own way.”
Although he feels Williamson is a better tactician, Chopra said that when it comes to batting prowess, Viral Kohli is unparalled. Even as we speak of their current forms, Kohli has proven to be a better performer in their recent Test assignments.
“Kohli is in good form. He may not have scored a hundred, but he rises to the big occasion. He struggled in 2014, but on the previous tour in 2018, he scored nearly 600 runs. He understands the conditions and situations well. Williamson is a top-class player for New Zealand. But, he hasn’t performed well in England and his record against India is also not that great. India’s bowlers have troubled Williamson.”
Both the players have been phenomenal in leading their teams throughout the two-year cycle of the WTC. Kohli has led his team in 14 WTC finals, during which they reigned the top spot in the ICC Test Team Rankings for the most part, although New Zealand has gained the No. 1 position now, with India slipping to the second spot by only a slight difference in their ratings.
The team won 10 out of the 14 games and lost four. On the other hand, New Zealand nine WTC games under the leadership of Kane Williamson, out of which they won six and lost three. Their latest series victory came against England.
India and New Zealand are all set to square off in the much-awaited ICC WTC final at the Ageas Bowl in Sothampton from June 18-June 22.
