Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman heaped praise on Rohit Sharma for the way he batted for India during the World Test Championship cycle. He was particularly impressed with the way the Indian opener batted against South Africa. Laxman pointed out that Rohit batted well when the ball was pitched outside the off-stump. With the ICC WTC final just a few days away, VVS Laxman explains the struggles of Rohit Sharma while facing NZ seamer Trent Boult.
Laxman went on to say that if Rohit could replicate a similar performance in the UK then he will excel in the English conditions as well.
“I think, not only for Rohit but for any opener, it is important to know where your off-stump is. Rohit since the time he has opened, the way he played even in the Indian conditions against South Africa, was very disciplined and he knew where his off-stump was. That is something if Rohit can replicate that in the UK, he will perform well. We all know what an unbelievable talented batsman he is, he is a match-winner for the Indian team. Knowing where your off-stump is and letting go of the balls outside the off-stump is something Rohit requires to focus,” said Laxman while replying to an ANI query during a virtual press conference.
Laxman further expressed Rohit’s struggles against left-arm seamer Trent Boult. Laxman pointed out Boult’s deliveries which come into the batsmen tends to trouble Rohit.
“He has another challenge in the form of Trent Boult who can bring the ball in. He also knows that against Boult, he cannot take his left leg across. These are the two things Rohit needs to address at the start of the innings,” he added.
India and New Zealand are scheduled to play the WTC final in Southampton from 18th June to 22nd June 2021.
