IND vs BAN: The first day of the first Test match between India and Bangladesh in Chattogram proved to be an even contest between bat and ball. India lost six wickets at the end of the first innings but also managed to score 278 runs.

In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill opened the innings with KL Rahul. The duo started the innings positively, playing some exquisite drives and pulls. The opening pair added 41 runs for the first wicket before T Islam had Shubman Gill (20 off 40) in the 14th over.

KL Rahul looked resolute, at the other end, but a hint of movement after pitching sent him back as the ball crashed onto his stumps. He departed in the 18th over after scoring 22 off 54 balls.

India was left in all sorts of trouble as Virat Kohli was out leg-before in the next over. From 41 for 0, India was tottering at 48 for 3. Rishabh Pant was then promoted in the batting order and he didn’t care about how many wickets were down and if India were under pressure.

The southpaw played in his usual fashion and counter-attacked. He went on to smash 6 fours and 2 sixes in his fighting knock of 46 runs in 45 balls. Pant added 64 runs for the fourth wicket with Pujara before getting out because of poor shot selection off Mehidy Hasan Mirza.

Pujara-Iyer partnership saves the day

Rishabh Pant’s wicket had India lose 4 wickets for 112 runs and needed another big partnership to get back into the game. Shreyas Iyer then joined hands with Pujara and the duo led India’s fightback.

They stitched a game-changing 149-run partnership for the 5th wicket and helped India cross the 250-run mark. Taijul Islam took his third wicket of the day as he broke the partnership by getting Cheteshwar Pujara (90) out leg-before.

The Indian veteran missed out on a century by just 10 runs. Shreyas Iyer, however, remained unbeaten on 82 off 169 balls. At the end of day 1 at stumps, India is 278 for 6 in 90 overs.
