IND vs ENG: According to reports, Mayank Agarwal is likely to replace KL Rahul for the rescheduled Test match against England, slated to be played from 1st to 5th July 2022. For the unversed, KL Rahul suffered a groin injury ahead of the start of the ongoing five-match T20 series against South Africa.
He will be sent to Germany for treatment and is likely to miss the entire England tour. According to InsideSport, Mayank Agarwal will be replacing KL Rahul in India’s Test squad. KL Rahul is currently the vice-captain of India’s Test side. In KL Rahul’s absence, Rishabh Pant is expected to be India’s vice-captain in the Test match.
“Mayank has been put on standby for England tour. We have asked the team management if they need a replacement for Rahul. We should get an answer by the 19th. In that case, Mayank will fly to the UK with the second batch. But it’s not finalized yet. Rishabh will be vice-captain,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.IN.
Earlier, it was learned that the team won’t be needed a replacement as the likes of Gill, Pujara, and Vihari can open with Rohit Sharma. However, considering the fact that India suffered a string of injuries during their last tour of England, the management is thinking to add Mayank Agarwal to the squad.
“Look, it’s very simple. The team always has certain plans with certain players. For example, Hanuma gives strength to the middle-order and if we push him to open if god forbid Shubman gets injured, the balance will be lost. It’s important that we have options ready in adverse situations,” the BCCI official told InsideSport.
