IND vs IRE 2nd T20I: Indian batter Sanju Samson is likely to take the place of Ruturaj Gaikwad, in the playing XI for the second T20I match against Ireland.
Samson, whose exclusion from the first T20I caused quite a stir, may now have the opportunity to show his worth once more. Gaikwad, who was selected as the designated opener in the starting XI for the first T20, has a niggle and might be forced to withdraw from the game.
There are a few reasons behind this replacement. Some of them are as follows.
Gaikwad didn’t open the innings for India, also with Ishan, he seemed to be in discomfort.
When given the opportunity to start the innings, Deepak Hooda took advantage of it by scoring 47 runs. Gaikwad might be replaced and the middle order filled by Samson. Samson made 458 runs in 17 games at a strike rate of 147 during the IPL 2022, demonstrating his strong performance.
Many supporters criticized interim skipper Hardik Pandya for not providing Samson an opportunity to play against Ireland in the first T20. When an experienced player like Samson is warming the bench, it has been questioned whether it was appropriate to select Deepak Hooda for the starting XI.
Ashish Nehra, the coach of Pandya’s IPL Team, justified the choice after Hooda’s Super batting performance quenched the naysayers.
“No, it’s not a tough call at all. Sanju Samson and Rahul Tripathi have come in place of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. Deepak Hooda was already in the squad. Even Venkatesh Iyer didn’t play a match against South Africa. And the kind of performance Deepak Hooda put in the IPL and in the Ranji Trophy, the whole season he scored runs, then in the IPL also. He certainly deserved a chance,” he said in a pre-match show on Sonyliv.
