IND vs SA 1st ODI: After losing the T20 series, South Africa has made an outstanding start to the ODI series, winning the first ODI by 9 runs on Thursday. In a rain-curtailed encounter, South Africa posted 249 runs in the first innings. At one stage, it didn’t look like they would reach there as the Proteas had lost their first four wickets for just 110 runs on the board.
On a tricky pitch, Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock did extremely well to not lose a single wicket in the powerplay. The first wicket came in the 13th over of the innings in the form of Malan (22). Thakur broke the partnership and then also picked the wicket of skipper Bavuma (0) with absolute beauty.
Markram, once again, struggled against Kuldeep Yadav. The latter deceived him and knocked his stumps over with a beautiful delivery. Quinton de Kock made his way to 48 off 54 balls but he too couldn’t convert it into a big score. South Africa had lost 4 wickets inside 23 overs and, thus, needed a partnership to score a competitive total.
In-form batter, David Miller then arrived at the crease and produced a match-winning unbeaten 139-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Both played valuable knocks to take the team a formidable score of 249. David Miller scored 75 runs in 63 balls, while Klaasen made 74 runs in 65 deliveries.
Sanju Samson’s heroics go in vain
In reply, India made a horrendous start with the bat. Both the openers departed inside 6 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad (19) and Ishan Kishan (20) fought hard but fell prey to spinners.
Shreyas Iyer (50 off 37) then started a unter-attack and led a turnaround. Samson provided him valuable support as he played a second fiddle to Iyer. Iyer, unfortunately, got out after scoring a fifty but Samson stayed right till the end.
He kept the hopes alive till the last over by playing a blistering knock of 86 runs in 63 balls but India still fell 9 runs short in the end.
IND vs SA 1st ODI Brief Scores: South Africa 249 for 4 (Miller 75*, Klaasen 74*, Thakur 2-35) beat India 240 for 8 (Samson 86*, Iyer 50, Ngidi 3-52, Rabada 2-36) by nine runs
