IND vs SA: The return of frontline Indian paceman Mohammed Shami in the T20 International format is set to witness another delay as the veteran has not fully recovered from the woes of Covid-19 that he contracted before the Australian series.

Notably, Shami was named for both the series against Australia and South Africa as a plan of the selection committee to strengthen India’s death bowling attack before the approaching T-20 World Cup in October.

Shami did not travel to Thiruvananthapuram where India hosts South Africa for the first T-20I on Wednesday. On the other side, the Proteas have already hit the south coast and have kickstarted their preparations from Sunday.

Shami’s replacement Umesh Yadav was spotted alongside India’s primary squad for the series which served as an indication that the Gujarat Titans paceman will also miss the crucial South African series.

In another jolt to the Indian team, in-form batsman Deepak Hooda will also unlikely make it for the South African series owing to a grievous back injury that kept him out of action in the deciding T-20I against Australia on Sunday.

Hooda will likely be replaced by Shreyas Iyer who played a couple of convincing knocks in West Zone’s Duleep Trophy triumph on Sunday. Hooda’s injury will likely be consulted by BCCI’s medical team and the spinning all-rounder will likely travel to Bangalore for a rehabilitation program.

Meanwhile, Shami’s inclusion in India’s T-20 World Cup squad remains in jeopardy as the senior pacer had last played a T-20I at the last edition of the championship in UAE. Though he had a fascinating season for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, the selectors will be keenly monitoring his health and progress in the nets. He was initially named in India’s 15-member squad for the marquee event.

India’s World Cup campaign will start against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23.
