IND vs SL 1st ODI: After winning the T20I series, India would be looking to win the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. The first ODI is scheduled to be played at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati.
India’s full-time skipper, Rohit Sharma will be making his comeback to the team. He will be having a point to prove, having received a lot of criticism with regard to his captaincy, of late.
Besides, Virat Kohli will also be making his return to the side. Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah was also added but the BCCI has decided not to rush him soon, and, thus, you won’t see him playing.
Rishabh Pant’s absence would mean that it will be easier to accommodate all three batters, namely Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul in the squad.
Shubman Gill to open India’s batting
Shikhar Dhawan has been left out of the squad and Shubman Gill, who has shown great form in the ODIs, is likely to open with Rohit Sharma. Both Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have been added to the spin attack and then you also have the likes of Washington Sundar and Axar Patel.
Given the kind of form Axar Patel is in, it will be hard to not include him in the playing XI. In the absence of Bumrah, Shami should lead the attack. He will share the fast-bowling duties with the likes of Siraj, Umran Malik, and Arshdeep Singh.
Sri Lanka gave a tough fight in the T20I series and is likely to pose a similar challenge in the ODIs as well. The batting unit is pretty much the same. The onus of scoring the bulk of the runs would be on Mendis, Nissanka, Asalanka, Dhanajaya de Silva, and Shanaka. All five would be crucial to the team’s fortune.
The likes of Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha, and Madushan form the pace-attack, while Theekshana and Hasaranga continue to be the vital elements in the spin department.
