IND vs SL: Defending 13 runs in the final over, Axar Patel held his nerves with the bat to help India win the game by 2 runs and take a 1-0 lead on Tuesday in the three-match series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka won the toss and asked India to bat first. India didn’t make a great start as Shubman Gill departed cheaply for just 7 runs. Suryakumar Yadav, who batted at number three, couldn’t sprinkle his magic as he mistimed a scoop shot only to depart for just 7 runs against his name.
Sanju Samson failed to live up to the expectations, while Ishan Kishan’s valiant knock of 37 runs in 29 balls came to an end in the 11th over. India had only managed to score 77 runs at that stage.
Hardik Pandya’s (29) wicket in the 15th over meant India was in trouble at 94 for 5 and needed a big partnership. Deepak Hooda then joined hands with Axar Patel and the duo stitched a brilliant unbeaten partnership of 68 runs for the 6th wicket.
As a result, India managed to post a challenging score of 162 runs in the first innings. Deepak Hooda played an outstanding knock of 41 runs in 23 balls, while Axar Patel amassed 31 off 20.
Shivam Mavi’s fiery debut leave SL stunned
In reply, Sri Lanka lost wickets early. Making his debut, Shivam Mavi sent both Nissanka (1) and de Silva (8) early in their innings. Sri Lanka needed a partnership but wickets kept falling at regular intervals.
Charith Asalanka (10) and Rajapaksa (10) got out cheaply, thanks to stellar bowling displays from Indian fast bowlers. Dasun Shanaka, however, threatened to take the game away with a brilliant knock of 45 runs in 27 balls.
Umran Malik then produced a 155kmph delivery to get rid of him and help India take control. The match still went right down to the wire as Karunratne kept the hopes alive for the visitors.
But with 13 needed in the last six balls, Sri Lanka fell 2 runs short in the end.
