India register a 69-run win against Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series on Tuesday and, thereby, took a 1-0 lead. The Men in Blue notched a huge score of 373 runs in the first innings, thanks to some sensational batting performances from the top three batters.
Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma gave the team a sensational start as the duo added 143 runs for the opening wicket. Both played aggressively and didn’t allow Sri Lanka to put pressure early on.
Gill departed in the 20th over after playing a valuable knock of 70 runs in 60 balls. Rohit Sharma looked on course to reach a ton but, unfortunately, got out off Madushanka on 83 off 67 balls.
Kohli continued his batting masterclass as he smashed boundaries to all parts of the ground. The Indian skipper notched a sensational knock of 113 runs in just 87 balls, including 12 fours and 1 six.
Shreyas Iyer (28 off 24) and KL Rahul (39 off 29) also made handy contributions with the bat. Sri Lanka wouldn’t be too happy with their bowling performance. Hasaranga had a forgettable day with the ball as he conceded 67 runs without any loss of wickets in 10 overs.
Indian bowlers ensure victory
Rajitha was the only bowler who looked good as he returned with stunning bowling figures of 3 for 88 in 10 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka didn’t start off too well as they had lost the first two wickets for just 23 runs on the board.
Asalanka was looking good but unfortunately, departed after scoring 23 off 28. At 64 for 3, Sri Lanka needed to develop a partnership. De Silva then joined hands with Nissanka and the duo added 72 runs for the fourth wicket before Shami finally broke the partnership.
Umran Malik also perished during Nissanka’s (72 off 80) stay at the crease a bit later, as Sri Lanka had lost five wickets for 161 runs. India was on course to bundle out the tail quickly but Dasun Shanaka had other plans. He took the game to the very last ball and smashed an outstanding century.
But lack of support at the other end meant India won the game quite comfortably in the end.
IND vs SL Brief Scores: India 373 for 7 (Kohli 113, Rohit 83, Gill 70, Rajitha 3-88) beat Sri Lanka 306 for 8 (Shanaka 108*, Nissanka 72, Malik 3-57, Siraj 2-30) by 67 runs
