IND vs SL: Right-arm fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will not be playing the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka starting January 10.
The pacer was supposed to return to the squad after a long break from cricket due to injury. Bumrah has been out of the squad since September 2022. Due to his back injury, he was even ruled out of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier named him to the squad for the ODIs on the recommendation of the all-India selection committee.
On January 3, BCCI released a statement saying “The All-India Senior Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.”
The 29-year-old has been asked not to rush into action by the BCCI. The news has been confirmed as Bumrah hasn’t yet reached Guwahati for the 1st ODI. With important tournaments lined up ahead like the Test series against Australia followed by the World Cup, a precautionary measure is being taken for the injury-free fitness of the pacer. Bumrah has helped team India win under crucial, tough situations.
“Bumrah, who was set to join the team in Guwahati ahead of the ODI series, will need some more time to build bowling resilience,” BCCI further added announcing Bumrah’s withdrawal from the team.
All set with the aim to join the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia later, the pacer will now be resting. “The pacer has undergone rehabilitation and has been declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He will be joining the Team India ODI squad soon,” said BCCI.
