India vs Australia Test: Darren Berry ‘staggered’ by Joe Burns selection

Despite his terrible form, Australian opener Joe Burns will still be playing in the first match of the India vs Australia Test. His chosenness has raised many questions, and former Australian wicketkeeper and coach Darren Berry made sure he was quite eloquent about it.

Burns has given no remarkable performances in this season. The player, who is clearly out of form, has just registered 62 runs in nine first-class innings. An utterly disappointing figure considering the number of appearances. He could only manage a single-digit score on four occasions during two tour games of Australia A.

Reacting to the Australian opener’s selection, Berry exclaimed he was ‘staggered’ by the decision of the selectors to continue with him.

“When I was driving in today (Wednesday), I heard reports that Joe Burns has got the nod,” Berry said.

“Apart from Trevor Hohns (chief selector), Justin Langer (coach), Tim Paine (captain) and George Bailey (selector) – who are given the responsibility of selecting the team – is there anyone else in this country that thinks Joe Burns should open in the first Test? No.

“I’m just staggered. I’m really staggered by this,” he added.

Burns inclusion may have a lot to do with David Warner and Will Pucovski’s absence, both of whom are recovering from injuring. Warner, who is struggling with his groin injury, has hinted that he will feature in the match commencing on Boxing Day.
