India lifting the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 created a sensation of joy among all sects of the Indian generation. Soon after a year of lifting the T20 WC, the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), along with Lalit Modi, the founding father of IPL, tasked together to create a new T20 League. So, here we take a look at the top 5 highest run-scorers in IPL among India and foreign players who have played in the tournament.

5. David Warner- 5447 Runs
The only overseas batsman on the list, David Warner is the current skipper of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He is one of the most dominating and dangerous batsmen in the shortest format of the game and has defined how to attack the bowlers and put them under pressure. The Australian opener also opens for SRH and finished as top 5 leading run-scorers in IPL for six consecutive seasons. Back in 2017, a year after SRH’s maiden title win, the side was still dominating in the league. It was game 37 against KKR when Warner hit his IPL career-best of 126 runs and even won the game for the side. Although he may be at the last place with 5447 runs, he boasts of the best average i.e., 42.22 in just 148 IPL matches to date.

The skipper of one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League, Rohit Sharma could barely stay out of the list of most runs scorers in IPL history. The flamboyant opener brags about hitting the highest number of sixes among the Indian batsmen in IPL. He has added numerous accolades to his home franchise and earned the honours of soaking pressure and winning games. With 5480 runs in 207 games, Rohit brings in a lot on the plate. From hitting humongous sixes to taking breath-taking catches, he is one of the most valued players in the league and 4th in the list of top 5 highest run-getters in IPL.
3. Suresh Raina- 5491 runs
Known to be the most acrobatic fielders in the Indian team, Suresh Raina has been one of the MVPs of the tournament. He plays for Chennai Super Kings and has been one of the leading run-scorer in IPL history. The left-handed batsman is not only one of the leading scorers, his contribution with the ball and on the field is truly fathomable. While he dominated all these years, he has lagged behind from the last two editions due to his rusty form. Moreover, he did not partake in the 2020 edition of the IPL in the UAE. Despite that, he still manages to hold third place in the list of top-5 leading run-scorer in IPL history. The CSK batsman has scored 5491 runs in 200 matches so far, just 86 runs behind Shikhar Dhawan (5577 runs).
2. Shikhar Dhawan- 5577 Runs
The ‘Gabbar’ of Indian cricket is one of the mainstays of any IPL team he plays for. One could easily presume victory due to his aggressive and match-winning approach. Besides, Dhawan also brags of hitting the most number of boundaries (634) in the IPL history. Known for his consistency and quirkiness of scoring runs, the 35-year-old has only evolved and improved over the years. In 2020, he scored two centuries and also finished second among the top 5 leading scorers in IPL 2020. He scored 618 runs in IPL 2020 and fell just 52 runs short of KL Rahul’s 670 runs. With 5577 runs in 184 matches, he is also the second on the list of top 5 leading run-scorers in IPL.
1. Virat Kohli- 6076 Runs
The Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli is synonymous with sheer dominance and consistency with the bat, and his energy level on the field remains unmatchable. The kind of determination that keeps him energized on the field is what keeps him above others in the league. The 2016 season witnessed one of the best seasons for ‘King Kohli’ where he amassed 973 runs at an average of 81.08 at a staggering strike rate of 152.03. He hit four centuries in that season, adding to a total of five centuries under his belt to date. Unfortunately, his side has not won a single IPL title since till today. He also reached the milestone of 6000 runs in the 2021 edition of the tournament. The right-handed batsman is at least 400+ runs ahead of other batsmen in the list. Kohli currently has 6076 runs in 191 innings at a strike rate of 130.41 and an average of 37.97.
While he rules the list of top 5 highest run-getters in IPL history, he surely needs some kind of talisman to win his maiden title in the tournament.
