Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Head Coach Brendon McCullum has expressed his confidence over the current KKR squad. Satisfied with their decision to retain its core team for IPL 2021, McCullum said that the group is very competitive this season.
“Pleased that we have been able to retain majority of our @KKRiders for the upcoming @IPL season. We weren’t far away last time and I’m sure this group will be very competitive this year. Thanks to the guys who were released for your efforts last season. We wish you well,” McCullum tweeted.
KKR has retained 17 of its previous season players ahead of the IPL 2021 final auction. Eoin Morgan will be leading the team this season as well. While Dinesh Karthik was named the named of KKR in IPL 2020, Morgan took over the captaincy midway through the season after Karthik passed on the role to him. MVPs namely, Pat Cummins and Andre Russell will be donning the purple jersey this season as well.
The franchise has retained its robust spin trio Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy. Their former captain Dinesh Karthik will continue to lead the batting line-up again this season.
KKR has retained its core squad, releasing only seven players ahead of this season, including, Tom Banton, Chris Green, Ali Khan, Nikhil Naik, Siddharth Manimaran, Harry Gurney, and Siddhesh Lad.
Earlier, KKR CEO Venky Mysore said, “We were very happy with the squad last year. We were just a bit unfortunate and that’s the way it goes. Literally, a little bit of run-rate issue in the end, even though we were tied on points, didn’t allow us to go further. But I think we will regroup and come in very very strong (this year).“
KKR is will the gaps left in their squad in the IPL auction that is scheduled to take place pretty soon, speaking on which Mysore added, “We will have some opportunity at the mini-auction to maybe do some fine-tuning. So, really looking forward to it and we are ready for IPL 2021!”
KKR finished fifth in the points table in the 13th edition of the cash-rich tournament last year.
