Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Tuesday announced that they would be donning blue jersey in their first match of the second leg of IPL 2021 in the UAE to honour the frontline warriors of the Covid-19 pandemic. RCB resume their campaign on September 20 in a clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

“RCB to wear Blue Jersey v KKR on 20th We at RCB are honoured to sport the Blue kit, that resembles the colour of the PPE kits of the frontline warriors, to pay tribute to their invaluable service while leading the fight against the Covid pandemic. #PlayBold#1Team1Fight,” RCB wrote posting a video on their official Twitter handle.

“What’s happening in our country with the spread of the COVID virus is deeply concerning. We as a franchise over the past week have had focused discussions on how we can help at the ground level and assist frontline workers in these dire times.”

“RCB has identified key areas in which immediate help is required in healthcare infrastructure related to Oxygen support and will be making a financial contribution in this regard,” said RCB captain Virat Kohli had said in a video released in May.

The franchise had initially planned on launching the jersey on May 3 in the match against the same team in Ahmedabad before the tournament was called off due to the rising concerns over the Covid-19 situation.

Earlier this year, the franchise announced that they would be making a financial contribution to support the healthcare infrastructure of the country and aid in the Oxygen supply system.

The fourteenth edition of the tournament will resume on September 19 with a blockbuster clash between the defending champions Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings in Dubai. The action will then shift to Abu Dhabi where RCB and KKR will place their first match of the second leg of IPL 2021.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has planned on leaving no stones unturned in ensuring the safety of each and every participant of the tournament this time around. The board has formulated a 46-page health advisory that includes all the pointers that everyone associated with the league needs to follow and circulated it among all the franchises. It has also directed all the franchise owners, members, and players to be fully vaccinated ahead of the tournament.
