South African players such as Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Quinton de Kock and Lungi Ngidi are set to miss the opening games of IPL 2021 for the respective franchises. All four players are part of South Africa’s squad who are due to play a three-match ODI series against Pakistan, starting from 2nd April 2021. The second and third match of the series will be played on 5th and 8th April 2021.
The news comes out as a big blow, especially for Delhi Capitals. Rabada and Anrich Nortje are two most important speedsters in the side. The duo made significant contributions with the ball in helping Delhi reach the finals last year.
All the players will have to undergo mandatory seven-day quarantine upon reaching India in a bid to combat the spread of coronavirus. However, if the players are transferred directly from one bio bubble to another bio-bubble, they will be allowed to directly participate in the league.
Nevertheless, the CSK CEO has very categorically said that Lungi Ngidi won’t be playing the opening game and thus will have to serve the mandatory quarantine period to then be available for selection.
“Ngidi will have to follow the same guidelines as others and will be put in quarantine once he arrives. Therefore he will not be available for selection for the opening game,” Vishwanathan said.
The other franchises, however, haven’t updated anything on the players’ availability.
